“It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.” – Hugh Laurie
I shared this quote on social media yesterday as it really resonated with me and with many of the clients I work with.
How often have you put things off because you don’t have all your ducks in a row?
How often have you written down goals and lengthy ‘To Do” lists to achieve those goals and yet never quite got there?
How many times have you put off launching something new in your business because everything isn’t quite perfect?
Here’s the thing – our websites will always need to be updated with exciting new content. Our social media profiles need constant new material to keep them fresh. Our branding, business cards, flyers etc can always be improved on. There is no such thing as the ‘perfect’ time when everything is exactly as we want it to be and we are 100% ‘ready’ to let the world in!
Now please don’t misunderstand me, I am a great advocate of keeping all our media as up to date and fresh as we possibly can, however when it becomes a barrier to progress, it is time to get real and admit that we rarely have the time to get everything absolutely pristine before we step up to that next level.
Holding onto your value until you are ready to deliver it is like standing silently on stage while your audience sits eagerly waiting for what you have to offer and guess what, no one will sit around for a silent performance, they will seek out someone who can give them what they are looking for.
Procrastination is not only the ‘thief of time’ it is also the thief of clients!
So what are you working on right now? How close are you to delivering it to your clients and prospects? What’s holding you back? Is there part of your offering you could get out there right now – a taster, a teaser, something that will keep your contacts engaged and interested in what’s coming next?
Whatever it is – send it out to your network with the promise of more to come and ask for feedback, what was most valuable, what would they like more of? This will keep your audience engaged, interested and looking forward to you next offering. It also keeps you in their minds and shows that you are evolving and adding more value for your clients.
Now think about what’s stopping you from completing the bigger task/project and getting it out there?
What are the next steps you need to take towards completion?
Who could help you by taking some of the tasks off your to do list?
Break it down into ‘Bite-sized’ chunks and work out what you can delegate – teenagers at home can be a brilliant asset on the technology front and they are so fast and efficient that tasks that take us hours can be done in no time at all.
Use your network – there are so many talented people around you both in your ‘face to face’ network and online – tap into their expertise and either barter services or pay them for the number of hours of help you need. You will be surprised at how much seeing those tasks completed on your behalf will spur you on to the finishing line!!
Set yourself a realistic time frame for completing each chunk of work and turn off all distractions until you get there, you will be surprised how much you achieve when your email and phone are silent!
Reward yourself for each milestone reached no matter how small.
In all of this busyness, don’t forget that you too need to learn and grow and develop your own skills
We are all so busy and often time poor and cash poor and therefore we put our own development and growth on the back burner promising ourselves that we will get round to it when things get a bit easier and we have more time and more money – somehow that perfect time we have in our mind’s eye never quite materialises and we go for months and even years without any serious intake of fresh knowledge or renewed self-awareness that will enable us to get to that next level.
In business we can be constantly giving out, everyone wants a ‘piece’ of us and whilst that can be very fulfilling and flattering, it can also be very draining and to carry on without taking time for ourselves is like trying to run a car on an empty tank.
I firmly believe we have a responsibility to ourselves and our colleagues and clients to constantly fill up that tank and lets face it, it’s never been easier to do that than it is today with the richness and depth of online training that is available to us all and the many seminars, workshops, coaches, trainers etc that we can all tap into.
Taking time for ourselves is so much more than just learning something new. It is investing in our greatest asset, it is fully recognising that we are our business and it is valuing ourselves enough to take some precious time to become an even better version of the incredible person we all are. It is also subconsciously saying to yourself -“I am worth it”
Learning and growing will make you feel so much more confident about sharing your value with your clients and prospects and will spur you on to greater heights.
I fully believe that we all only scratch the very surface of our true potential and beyond where we are now lies an infinite well of potential that would absolutely astound us.
So take the plunge, dive in and let the magic unfold!
You are ready for this!
